Amey Appointed Associate Dean for Research Administration at Hopkins Medical School
Michael Amey has been named Associate Dean for Research Administration at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He will continue to direct the Office of Research Administration for the School, which reviews and negotiates grant contract awards and partners with academic research teams on compliance and administrative policy issues.
Since becoming Assistant Dean for Research Administration in 1986, Amey has been a productive advocate for institutional change and for adherence to regulators in a constantly growing research environment. During his tenure, the School of Medicines annual research budget has grown from $90 million to over $400 million. This growth in research funds was matched by the need for effective university-wide policy and systems change, and Amey is widely recognized as a valued resource, expert and advisor to the Schools leaders, according to Edward D. Miller, M.D., Dean and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Amey has played an important role in a number of projects, such as the creation of the Center for Inherited Disease Research, Web-based compliance training and access to financial information web project, and Institutional Review Board plans. He also played a key role in research compliance planning and development of a clinical research billing data base.
Amey joined the Department of Medicine in 1975 as financial manager for University Affairs, and in 1977, was promoted to associate administrator for University Affairs. He became Director of Research Administration at the School of Medicine in 1980 and Assistant Dean, Research Administration in 1986.
From 1969 to 1971, Amey was an elementary school teacher in Baltimore. He also served active duty in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1971. From 1972 to 1975, he was a fiscal planner and budget officer for the Mayors Office of Manpower Resources in Baltimore.
Amey holds a bachelors degree in Social Relations and a master of administrative science, both from Johns Hopkins.
Amey and his wife, Betsy Thayer Fyfe Amey, have a daughter, Kate, 24, and a son, John, 20.
