Gary M. Stephenson, M.S., has been named associate director of media relations for The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions Office of Communications and Public Affairs. Stephenson will assist in managing the news and information team and implementing new public information strategies designed for business, health care and medical press.
Prior to joining Hopkins, Stephenson, 46, was associate director for media relations at the University of Maryland at College Park, the flagship campus of the University of Maryland System.
A journalist by training, Stephenson holds a master's degree from American University and has written extensively on clinical and health care policy issues. He is former Washington Editor for Diagnostic Imaging Magazine. He was also the executive editor for the R&R Publications book Standards of Medical Care, a columnist for Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry magazine, and a writer for the National Institutes of Health publication Research Resources Reporter. His articles have appeared in several other publications including Air & Space Magazine, Final Frontier, Health News, Report on Medical Guidelines and Outcomes Research, and Cardiovascular Reviews and Reports.
Stephenson lives in Carroll County, Maryland, with his wife and two daughters.
The Office of Communications and Public Affairs at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions is headed by Elaine Freeman, executive director. Joann Rodgers is deputy director and director of media relations.
