Elaine Freeman has been named executive director of the newly named Office of
Communications and Public Affairs of The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and
The Johns Hopkins Health System.
The change reflects the office's expanded role in marketing communications and
in communications related to the business of medicine.
Reporting directly to the president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health
System and to the deans of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and
School of Nursing, the Office of Communications and Public Affairs also is
responsible for media relations, publications and special events, as well as
communications in support of employee and donor relations.
The Johns Hopkins Medical Letter, Health After 50, with 520,000 paid
subscribers, also is coordinated by the Office.
Freeman has been director of the Office of Public Affairs, as it was previously
known, since 1982. The office and its staff have won numerous major
communications awards during that time. For the past five years, the hospital
and School of Medicine have ranked first or second in U.S. News & World
Report's rankings of hospitals and of schools of medicine.
