Baltimore’s burgeoning Latino community
arrives on the scene
Shortly after Carina Garcia, a native of Mexico, arrived in Baltimore,
she became pregnant with her second child. Uncertain of where
to turn, she asked acquaintances for advice. They all suggested
Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Carina had spotted the hospital’s
free mobile clinic, Care-A-Van, at Centro de la Comunidad, the
Hispanic community center on Eastern Avenue, so she had a good
feeling about Bayview. Before long, she was receiving prenatal
care there.
